After Jackson’s vanishing act on Saturday, I hadn’t spoken to him since. I’d texted my mom to let her know he was on his way to pick up Sophie but didn’t answer her other questions when I got home an hour later. I knew it would only encourage more gossip if I rushed out after him, so I stuck it out and tried to mingle with the few people I knew.

When that failed, I found Carmen in the breakroom and decided to help her pack up her stuff. Instead of texting Jackson about a ride, I grabbed one with Carmen and left after the other employees cleared out. It wasn’t a late night, which turned out to be a good thing, given how tired I was.

Sunday was supposed to be a relaxing day with the girls, but we ended up shopping most of the day for gifts for their friends and my mom. It was two weeks until Christmas, and I was still scrambling to get stuff done, though I was thankful we’d gotten the tree up and the house decorated. We got home that evening and shoved the bags under the tree so I could wrap them later, and then ordered a pizza and called it a night.

By Monday morning, I felt awkward about how things had been left between Jackson and me. It felt like I had whiplash from his constant back-and-forth of mixed signals. First, he pinned me against the wall and kissed me, and then flinched when I accidentally brushed his leg under the table at dinner. After that, I got him to dance with me, and it seemed like he was having a good time until a slow song came on, and he seemed to freak out again.

I expected—or rather hoped—that he would text me at some point so we could talk about what happened, but there was nothing but silence. I considered texting him but didn’t want to be the one to make the first move. It was childish, but I refused to do anything until I knew what was going on inside his head.

When I got to the office, I was surprised that I beat him there. Granted, I had only worked for Mason, Inc. for three days, but so far, Jackson had always been there when I got in.

I went about the morning the same way I had last week. I started a fresh pot of coffee and turned on the laptop Jackson had given me while it brewed. A handful of emails popped up in my inbox, which surprised me, given that I hadn’t been there long enough for people to send me anything.

A quick glance showed that the majority of them were from employees, thanking Jackson and me for throwing such a wonderful holiday party. I smiled and felt a sense of pride wash over me from a job well done.

I got up and headed to the breakroom, desperate for another cup of coffee. I’d already had one at home while getting the girls ready for school.
